Drop Bars or Flat Bars: Fitting a Handlebar Bag

The bag fits the bars perfectly in the shop. On your bike the drops curve inward, the hoods sit where the bag wants to be, and the brake hoses run exactly through the gap the straps need. Nothing is broken — the cockpit is just a different shape than the one the bag was drawn around.

The measurement that decides whether a handlebar bag fits is not the bar width but the usable straight section either side of the stem, and how much room there is between the bar and the tyre or the cables. Drop bars give you a short, cluttered straight and plenty of clearance below; flat bars give you a long clean straight and much less room underneath.

Measure those two things and almost every handlebar bag question answers itself.

Take these three measurements first

  1. Usable straight, left and right. From the edge of the stem clamp outwards to where the bar starts to bend, or to the first thing bolted on it. Measure both sides — shifters, a computer mount and a light rarely sit symmetrically.
  2. Clearance below. From the underside of the bar straight down to the tyre or the front of the frame, with the fork compressed if the bike has suspension. This is what limits bag height.
  3. Cable and hose layout. Note where housing leaves the bar and where it crosses the space in front of the head tube. Straps have to go around housing, never through it.

Two numbers and one photograph. That is the whole fit problem.

Drop bars: short straight, generous clearance

A drop bar gives you very little flat bar to strap to. Between the stem and the start of the bend there is often only a few centimetres each side, and modern bars fill it with hoods, tape and internally routed housing that emerges right where you were going to put a strap.

What you get in return is space. Because the bar is above and forward of the wheel, and because the drops themselves sit low, there is normally plenty of vertical room for a bag hanging below the bar. Riders on drop bars usually end up with a compact bag or a roll suspended in front of the bars rather than a wide box.

Two things catch people out. Bar tape stops just short of the stem, so straps often land on bare aluminium or carbon — use a wrap or a pad, especially on carbon, and stay inside whatever clamping limit the manufacturer specifies. And an aero bar with a flat top section is a different shape entirely from a round one, so a strap sized for a round tube will not sit flat.

Flat and riser bars: long straight, tight clearance

A flat bar is the opposite problem. There is plenty of straight to strap to — often twenty centimetres or more each side of the stem once the grips and controls are accounted for — so wide bags mount easily and sit securely.

The limit is underneath. On a mountain bike or a hybrid the bar sits lower relative to the wheel and the fork travel eats the gap, so a bag that clears the tyre standing still can touch it when the fork compresses over a root. Measure with the fork sagged under your weight, not standing in the hall.

Riser bars add one more thing to watch: the bend starts closer to the stem than it looks, and the rise means the outer part of the bar is not in the same plane as the middle. A wide rigid bag can end up mounted on two surfaces that are not parallel, and it will twist.

Alt bars are a category of their own

Where the weight goes, whichever bar you have

Weight at the bars sits high and ahead of the steering axis, which is the position the bicycle notices most. A little makes the steering feel calm and planted. Too much makes it slow, and makes the front wheel want to flop over at low speed — noticeable the first time you push the loaded bike up a slope.

The practical rule is light and bulky at the bars, dense and heavy in the frame triangle. A sleeping bag, a jacket, a down layer belong here; tools, food and water belong lower down, in the frame and top tube bags. That trade-off is set out fully in why weight distribution matters when packing your bike.

A bag that keeps its shape helps more than a light one. If a soft roll sags, it ends up resting on the tyre or the cables, and then you either repack it or ride with it rubbing — which is the argument for a stiffer fabric in this position rather than the lightest one available.

Stabilising the front

Whatever the bar shape, a handlebar bag needs something stopping it rotating downward. Usually that is a third strap running from the bag to the head tube or the fork crown, and it is the strap people leave slightly loose because it is fiddly.

Do it up properly. A bag that has rotated has changed the clearance you measured, and clearance at the front wheel is not something to find out about at speed. Tension everything with the bag loaded, then ride an hour and re-tension.

  • Bar width is not the number that matters. Usable straight either side of the stem, and clearance below the bar, are.
  • Drop bars: little room to strap to, plenty of room underneath. Compact bags and rolls suit them.
  • Flat and riser bars: plenty of room to strap to, much less underneath — measure with the fork sagged.
  • Keep bar loads light and bulky; dense items belong in the frame triangle.
  • The stabiliser strap to the head tube is the one people leave loose, and it is the one holding your clearance.

Questions we get asked

How do I know if a handlebar bag will fit my drop bars?

Measure the straight section from the edge of the stem clamp out to where the bar begins to bend, on both sides, and then measure from the underside of the bar down to the tyre. The first number tells you what can be strapped on; the second tells you how tall the bag can be. Cables leaving the bar are the third thing to check, and a photograph from above shows them better than any measurement.

Can I use the same bag on flat bars and drop bars?

Sometimes, but they are genuinely different fits. A bag sized for the long straight of a flat bar usually has nowhere to sit on a drop bar, and a compact drop-bar bag looks lost on a wide flat bar. If you are moving one bag between two bikes, size it for the more restrictive cockpit.

Will a handlebar bag rub my tyre?

It will if the clearance was measured standing still on a suspension bike, or if the bag has sagged. Measure with your weight on the bike and the fork compressed, tension the stabiliser strap that stops the bag rotating downward, and re-check after the first hour of riding.

Is it safe to strap a bag to carbon bars?

With care. Use a pad or a wrap under the straps rather than webbing directly on the surface, keep straps away from the clamping area, and stay inside whatever limit the bar manufacturer specifies. That limit is not a suggestion, and it is the reason to spread the load rather than tighten harder.

How much weight can I put on the handlebars?

Less than you think, and the limit is handling rather than strength. Weight at the bars sits high and ahead of the steering axis, so it slows the steering and makes the front wheel flop at walking pace. Light and bulky is the right pairing here — a jacket, a sleeping bag, a spare layer.

What about cables running across the front?

Route straps around housing, never over it in a way that pinches. Crushed housing gives you vague braking or shifting that is very hard to diagnose later. On bikes with a lot of housing at the front, a bag that hangs from two points and stands off the head tube slightly is easier to live with than one strapped tight against everything.
