The Guy Who Wouldn’t Stop Chasing Me
The Guy Who Wouldn’t Stop Chasing Me
Content Type: LESENOK Cycling Story
Collection: Everyday Cycling Life
Reading Time: 4–5 minutes
Cycling is more than exercise or transportation. Everyday bike rides can create unexpected friendships, funny encounters, and connections between people who share the same passion. This cycling story begins with a forgotten pair of sunglasses, turns into an accidental bicycle race, and ends with two new friends who discover they have something important in common: bicycles — and absolutely no ability to let each other win.
Emily had been having a perfectly normal Saturday.
A bike ride through town.
Coffee at a small café.
Twenty minutes sitting outside pretending she wasn't checking her phone.
Then back on the bicycle and home.
Nothing adventurous was supposed to happen.
About three minutes after leaving the café, she noticed a cyclist behind her.
At first, she ignored him.
Then he got closer.
So… Are We Racing Now?
Emily increased her speed slightly.
So did he.
She looked over her shoulder.
Still there.
Interesting.
Emily accelerated again.
The cyclist accelerated too.
Okay, buddy.
Apparently, this was happening.
She leaned forward and started riding properly.
The quiet Saturday ride was officially over.
He Would Not Give Up
There was a small hill ahead.
Emily knew this hill.
She also knew she could make people regret challenging her on it.
She pushed harder.
For a moment, the cyclist disappeared farther behind.
Emily smiled.
Victory.
Then she reached a traffic light.
Red.
Of course.
The cyclist came closer just as the light changed.
Emily launched forward before he could reach her.
She heard him shouting something behind her.
Probably an excuse.
She couldn't hear it.
And frankly, winners don't need explanations.
Five Miles Later…
By now Emily was committed.
This was no longer about getting home.
It was about principle.
She took a corner quickly.
He followed.
She accelerated on another straight section.
He followed.
At one point he almost caught her and tried shouting again.
Emily pedaled harder.
She hadn't ridden this fast all summer.
Eventually, after nearly five miles of this completely unnecessary competition, he finally pulled alongside her.
Both were breathing hard.
Emily looked at him and smiled.
“Not bad.”
The man stared at her.
“WHAT?”
Then he reached toward the pocket of his cycling jersey.
The Most Embarrassing Finish Line in Cycling History
He held out a pair of sunglasses.
Emily stopped pedaling.
Her sunglasses.
The ones she had been wearing at the café.
“You left these on the table,” he said.
Silence.
“I've been trying to give them back to you.”
Emily looked at the glasses.
Then at him.
Then back at the glasses.
“You chased me five miles for these?”
“I tried to tell you!”
“I thought you were racing me!”
He stared at her for a second.
Then smiled.
“Well… you were losing.”
That was the moment Emily decided she liked him.
Coffee, Attempt Number Two
His name was Jake.
He had been sitting a few tables away at the café when Emily left.
He noticed the sunglasses, grabbed them and jumped on his bicycle expecting to catch her within a minute.
Instead, Emily apparently interpreted basic human kindness as a declaration of war.
They rode back toward town together.
Slowly.
For approximately six minutes.
Then Jake accelerated up a small hill.
Emily looked at him.
“Seriously?”
He looked back.
“Thought you liked racing.”
And off they went again.
The Bicycle Gave Her Something She Hadn't Forgotten
A week later, they met for another ride.
This time intentionally.
Then another.
Soon Saturday coffee rides became normal.
So did exploring new roads, comparing routes and sending each other messages that began with:
“I found this road…”
Which every cyclist knows can lead to absolutely anything.
Emily and Jake became friends because they already shared something that made conversation easy.
They loved bicycles.
They loved exploring.
And, unfortunately for peaceful group rides, neither particularly enjoyed losing.
They Still Race Each Other
Months later, they still ride together.
They still stop for coffee.
And they still turn completely normal Sunday rides into competitions neither is willing to officially call a race.
Jake attacks hills.
Emily waits for long straight sections.
There are accusations of unfair drafting.
There are suspiciously timed water breaks.
There are no prizes.
Nobody cares.
Emily got her sunglasses back that Saturday.
But she also got something she hadn't left at the café.
A new cycling friend.
That's one of the things we love about bicycle life at LESENOK.
Cycling gives us roads, adventures, fitness and freedom.
But sometimes it gives us people.
Someone to ride with.
Someone to drink coffee with.
Someone who understands why taking the longer road home makes perfect sense.
And occasionally…
Someone you absolutely refuse to let pass you.
Some friendships begin with hello.
This one began with a five-mile misunderstanding.
