Bike Bags for Mountain Bikes: Working Around the Suspension

Every piece of advice about loading a bicycle assumes a frame that stands still. A mountain bike does not. The rear triangle moves through its travel, the seatpost drops out from under the saddle on descents, and the front wheel needs room to come up through the fork without meeting anything.

Bags for a mountain bike have to live around three moving parts: rear suspension travel, dropper post drop, and fork compression. That rules out the big seat pack and usually rules out a full frame bag, and it pushes the load towards the bars, the top tube, the fork legs and your waist.

It is a smaller carrying budget than a gravel bike gets. It also handles far better on the ground a mountain bike is for.

The dropper post decides the back of the bike

This is the constraint that surprises people who come from touring. A saddle bag straps to the rails and the post. Drop the post 150 millimetres on a descent and the bag either squashes into the tyre or drags on its own straps.

Measure it properly: with your weight on the bike and the post fully down, measure from under the saddle rails to the top of the tyre. That number is your absolute ceiling, and it is usually small enough that only a very compact bag fits.

It happens to line up with what we already build. The saddle bags in our range are small ones — the SD-3 and the MINI-1 — and we do not make large expedition seat packs at all, because a big bag hanging behind the rear axle swings the tail of the bike. On a mountain bike that is not a preference, it is a clearance problem as well. The full argument is in why we only make small saddle bags.

Suspension eats the frame triangle

On a full-suspension frame the rear shock usually sits inside the main triangle, and the space that is left changes shape as the bike moves through its travel. A bag that fits the static triangle can foul the shock or the linkage at bottom-out.

Two workable answers:

  • A half-frame bag in the upper part of the triangle. It stays clear of the shock, keeps the bottle cage usable, and puts weight low and central where it does the least harm. That is what the half-frame bags are for.
  • A top tube bag. Small, out of the way of everything moving, and reachable without taking a hand far off the bar.

A hardtail is a different case. The triangle is static, so a full frame bag is genuinely an option — measure it with the fork sagged, because a compressed fork changes what the down tube sees, and check the bag does not touch your knees when you stand. The frame and top tube bags cover both shapes.

Fork legs and the front of the bike

Suspension fork legs are not a mounting surface. The lowers move relative to the stanchions, so anything strapped across both binds the fork, and strapping to the stanchions themselves damages them. Some forks have bolt bosses on the lowers rated for a cargo cage — if yours does, that is the only sanctioned place to hang weight, and the fork manufacturer's limit is the number that matters.

At the bars, keep it light and check clearance with the fork compressed rather than standing still. A bag that clears the tyre in the hall can meet it over a root. Bar shape matters too: flat and riser bars give a long straight to strap to but much less room underneath — that trade-off is covered in the handlebar bags range and in more detail elsewhere on the blog.

What ends up carrying the load

Add the constraints up and a mountain bike setup usually looks like this:

  1. Frame triangle — half-frame bag with the dense items: tools, tube, pump, food.
  2. Top tube — phone, snacks, keys. The bag you open most.
  3. Stem — a bottle or a snack you take without looking, from the stem and feed bags.
  4. Bars — light bulk only, if there is clearance for it.
  5. Your waist — a hip pack for the things you want when you step off the bike, and the one carrying position that no amount of suspension travel interferes with.

Riders who cannot make that add up usually want a rack and panniers, and a rack usually wants a different bicycle. That is an honest answer rather than a sales one.

Abrasion, not weather, is what wears these bags out

A bag on a mountain bike gets dragged through undergrowth, packed with wet gear and put down on gravel at every stop. It also sits in the spray coming off a knobbly tyre, which throws far more grit than a road tyre does.

That is an argument for abrasion resistance over the lightest possible fabric. Three measurements before you order

  1. Saddle rails to tyre with the dropper fully down, sitting on the bike.
  2. The frame triangle — the three inner tube lengths, and where the shock or linkage intrudes.
  3. Bar to tyre with the fork sagged under your weight.

In short

  • Three moving parts set the limits: rear travel, dropper drop and fork compression. Measure everything at full compression, not standing still.
  • A dropper post rules out anything but a small saddle bag — measure rails to tyre with the post fully down.
  • Full suspension usually means a half-frame bag; a hardtail can take a full frame bag.
  • Do not strap anything across suspension fork legs. Use the cage bosses on the lowers if the fork has them, or leave the fork alone.

Questions we get asked

Can I use a frame bag on a full-suspension bike?

A half-frame bag, usually yes. A full one, usually no — the shock and linkage sit in the space the bag wants, and the shape of that space changes as the bike moves through its travel. Measure the triangle with the suspension bottomed out rather than at rest, and expect to use the upper part of it only.

What saddle bag works with a dropper post?

Only a small one, and only after you have measured the drop. Sit on the bike, drop the post all the way, and measure from under the saddle rails to the top of the tyre. That gap is the ceiling for a loaded bag. If it is small, the load belongs in the frame triangle or on your waist instead.

Can I strap bags to my suspension fork?

Not to the legs. The lowers move relative to the stanchions, so a strap across both binds the fork, and straps on the stanchions damage the sealing surfaces. If the fork has bolt bosses on the lowers for a cargo cage, use those and respect the fork manufacturer's weight limit. Otherwise leave the fork unloaded.

Is a hip pack better than a bag on the bike for mountain biking?

For the things you want at a stop — phone, keys, a snack, a tool — it is hard to beat, because nothing on the frame is affected by suspension travel and the weight is on you rather than the bicycle. For anything heavy it is worse: weight on your hips raises your centre of gravity and you feel it on long climbs.

Do bags rattle on rough ground?

They do when they are loose or half empty. Pack so the contents cannot move inside the bag, tension every strap with the bag loaded, and re-check after the first hour of riding. A bag that rattles is also a bag that is slowly working its straps loose, so it is worth fixing rather than tolerating.

Which fabric should I choose for a mountain bike?

Pick for abrasion rather than for weight. These bags get dragged through undergrowth and put down on gravel, and grit off a knobbly tyre is harder on fabric than road spray.
