Bike Bag Sets: Buying the System Instead of One Bag at a Time

Nobody plans to own five bike bags. It happens one at a time: a frame bag for the tools, then a top tube bag because the phone kept ending up in a jersey pocket, then a handlebar bag because the frame bag was full. Three years later the bike carries a collection — five bags, four colours, two of them fighting for the same space behind the stem.

A bike bag set is that collection bought on purpose. The bags are chosen to fill positions on the bike that do not compete with each other, made in the same colours, and sized so the whole thing goes on in one afternoon. The point is not saving money; it is ending up with a setup that was designed rather than accumulated, on a bike you have measured once instead of three times.

Whether it is the right way to buy depends on where you are starting from — and there is a good reason to buy one bag at a time too.

What a set is actually solving

Bags on a bike interact. A top tube bag and a handlebar bag both want the space behind the stem. A full-frame bag and bottle cages want the same triangle. A big handlebar roll and a feeder bag argue over the bar. Bought separately, these conflicts get discovered after the second purchase; bought as a set, they were sorted out before the bags were cut.

The other thing a set solves is the measuring. A custom frame bag needs the triangle measured; a top tube bag needs the length of flat top tube behind the stem; a handlebar bag needs the straight section of bar. Sending all of that once, with two photographs, is a smaller job than sending it three times over two years, and it means the bags are cut for the same bike at the same time.

And there is the look, which counts for more than people admit. A set in one main colour with one accent reads as part of the bike rather than as luggage on it.

The sets, by the riding they are built for

For the daily ride

Daily Commute Set-3 is three bags for the rider who leaves the house thinking they will only take the essentials and comes back with twice as much. It is meant to replace the backpack on the ride to work and the errand run after it. US-3 is the version built around a rack: a trunk bag on the back, a frame bag cut to your measurements, and a small front frame bag sized for a phone. City Duo is the two-bag answer — a custom frame bag plus a matching top tube bag — for the rider who wants the frame used properly and nothing else on the bike. The women's version of the same pair is made to the same principle.

For the small stuff

Colorful-3 and Mini Colorful-3 are compact bags for keys, wallet, phone and a multitool — a way of emptying your pockets onto the bike without adding luggage. The vintage-style pair is a small frame organiser and a compact handlebar bag. These are the sets for a city bike that is never going further than the other side of town.

For the weekend on gravel

Gravel Weekend Set-3 is three bags in the frame: a large frame bag made to your triangle, a front frame bag and a rear triangle bag. Nothing hangs off the bars or the saddle, so the bike stays narrow and handles as it did before. Frame Bags Set-3 is the same idea sold as a set or one bag at a time. This is the shape most gravel riders arrive at by themselves after a year of experimenting; the set just gets there in one order.

For trips that need more

Gravel Adventure Set-4 adds a front bag to the frame trio: a handlebar bag that converts into a belt bag when you leave the bike, a front frame bag, a rear frame bag and a full frame bag cut to your frame with two compartments. Comfort Trip Set-4 is four matched bags for the rider who mixes commuting, weekend rides and the occasional multi-day trip and wants one setup that covers all three. Set-5 goes one further and adds a feeder bag at the bars for a bottle or food.

When a set is the wrong purchase

• You already own the anchor bag. If there is a frame bag on the bike that you like, buying a set that includes another one wastes the biggest piece. Build around what you have instead.
• The bike has a rack and you use it. A rack changes the whole plan — a trunk bag or panniers carry more than any frame set, and the front-of-bike bags become optional. Start with the rack bags and add a small frame bag for tools.
• You do not yet know how you ride. A first-year rider who bought a four-bag set usually finds two of the bags stay in a cupboard. One bag, used for a season, tells you what the second should be. Our thoughts on sizing a setup to real trips are in how much bag volume you actually need.
• The frame is unusual. Full suspension, a tiny triangle, an integrated battery. The set's frame bag may not fit, and the set stops being a set. Send a photograph first and we will tell you which pieces make sense.

Sets and custom sizing

In most of these sets, the frame bag is made to your bicycle and the smaller bags are standard sizes chosen to sit around it. That is the sensible split: the frame bag is the one piece where a centimetre matters, because it has to fill a triangle without fouling the cables or the cages. The top tube bag, the feeders and the handlebar bag fit the great majority of bikes as they are.

Colour works the same way across all of them: you choose a main colour and a decor colour and the whole set is made in it. The catalogue is on the available colours page. If you want one bag in the set to differ — a brighter handlebar bag, say — ask; it is a set, not a rule.

Sending the measurements once

For a set with a custom frame bag, we need the inside of the front triangle — the three sides, measured along the tubes — and a photograph from the side with the bottle cages and pump in place if you intend to keep them. If the set has a top tube bag, add the length of flat top tube behind the stem. If it has a handlebar bag, add the width of straight bar and a photograph of the cockpit. After the order we send a diagram showing where to measure, and we confirm the fit before anything is cut. Custom pieces are made for one bicycle and are not returnable, which is why we confirm first.
